The insurance companies spend a lot of effort to calculate premiums that cover the expected cost and include a healthy profit margin. That is why they are called premiums- you are paying extra for that coverage. The other great car rental scam is the offer to refill the petrol tank for you when you return the car - by charging you for a full tank of petrol regardless of how much is actually needed.
